A sceleton for "Learn from the dead to stay alive"

Introductory Paragraph
Begin with an interesting quotation related to your opinion about facing a tragedy with honor
(You will need a transition here)

- End the Intro paragraph with your thesis statement:

Even though historical tragedies are very hard to talk and think about for the survivals, a people can learn more from its past tragedies than glories because any historical tragedy related to war teaches peoples always to look for pieceful resolutions and analyzis of a historical tragedy is a necessary lesson for the new generations to be more prepared for the future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Body Paragraph #1
Topic of the body thesis:
historical tragedies are very hard to talk and think about for the survivals
- Germans wanted to completely destroy the Berliin wall in order to forget about the fact of its existense (Laid)

- Explain how your evidence supports the topic sentense

- According to Bruno Bettelheim, many people did not want to believe in existense of Nazi concentration and death camps because they feared to face a horror reality occured in the past.

Body Paragraph #2
Even though historical tragedies are very hard to talk and think about for the survivals, a people can learn more from its past tragedies than glories because any historical tragedy related to war teaches peoples always to look for pieceful resolutions.
- Find evidence - like facts, examples, quotations, or statistics that back it upor support the topic sentence of this paragraph.

- Explain how your evidence supports the topic sentence

Another example that shows that any historical tragedy related to war teaches peoples always to look for pieceful resolutions is...

- Find more evidence - facts, examples, quotations, or statistics that back it up or support the topic sentence of this paragraph.

- Explain how this second piece of evidence supports the topic sentence.

Body Paragraph #3
The most important reason a people can learn more from its past tragedies than glories is because analyzis of a historical tragedy is a necessary lesson for the new generations to be more prepared for the future.
- According to Laid, the Berlin Wall that physically separated one nation for years, united it and made strong as never before.
- Explain how your evidence supports the topic sentence

"The ignored Lesson of Anne Frank" tells that those Jews who survived Nazi Germany realized that an active fight till the end is the only way to face and stop evil.
- Find more evidence - facts, examples, quotations, or statistics that back it up or support the topic sentence of this paragraph.

- Explain how this second piece of evidence supports the topic sentence.

Conclusion
So you can see that although historical tragedies are very hard to talk and think about for the survivals, a people can learn more from its past tragedies than glories for two main reasons. First, any historical tragedy related to war teaches peoples always to look for pieceful resolutions. But most importantly, analyzis of a historical tragedy is a necessary lesson for the new generations to be more prepared for the future.
- Now you will return to your attention-getter from the introduction

After all said, the last and probably most necessary way to think about the past tragedies in the history and the way to live in the future is to believe that there is more good than bad in the world as little Anne believed that "people are good at heart".

Thesis for paper 3

Even though historical tragedies are very hard to talk and think about for the survivals, a people can learn more from its past tragedies than glories because any historical tragedy related to war teaches peoples always to look for pieceful resolutions and analyzis of a historical tragedy is a necessary lesson for the new generations to be more prepared for the future.

"Berlin Walls" by Brian Ladd

It is impressive how the Berlin Wall was built in one night, was physically present for about 30 years and still remains in the mentality of the German people nowadays. The Wall divided and united people at the same time. The past always has an echo in the present and future. Whether a positive or negative one, depends on how well people are able to make right conclusions from it. It is shocking for me that the German nation tried for along time and is still trying to ignore some facts of its history. Not wanting to leave a piece of the Wall as a monument is a clear example of that. Nobody can blame them after everything survived but theirs is not the most tragic history in the world. Each people has its own tragedies and black pages of history, the strength is to keep them in the book in order to teach children what is wrong and right in the world of human society. In this sense, little Anne Frank who was killed together with her whole family is stronger than anyone by declaring in her last words: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

Coke commerical

I would say this is a true community unified by their love for Coke. Barnlund would definitely describe these people as neighbors not only because of their physical closeness but also the emotional symbolic one. However, this commercial seems to me a little bit scary. In my prospective, it looks more like a “cultural myopia” than a “universal discourse”. This gathering of people standing in the same position, singing the same song with the same expressions on their faces and holding the same bottle of Coke reminds me the German people in the time of Nazis or the Soviet people in the communist period who blindly followed one ideology and had to behave and think in the same way. The person, who does not want to follow it, becomes a social outcast and even a danger for the society. Such brainwashing and indoctrination are often followed by manipulation of people in someone’s purpose. Of course, promotion of Coke is not such dangerous as that of Nazism but when the principle is the same, the outcome might be equally negative.

Alice Walker "Everyday Use"

This story recalls me so much my two cousins: one of them Vita (the oldest one) behaving in her own way almost as a boy and making her dreams and thoughts apart from others and the youngest one Julia looking exactly as her mother (my taunt), sweet beautiful girl who used to have the best clothes and most of love and attention in their family. Logically, both of them never got along with each other until the day when Julia went to the same college as her graduating sister situated far away from their home town and needed her help with everything. Finally, she realized that Vita is her family and the only person besides parents who she can really rely on…Maggie seems to be quieter and less demanding than Julia, however their problem is in the same lack of personality and acceptance of differences. Walker demonstrates how blind, miserable and isolated look those who do not understand and have no intention to learn about possible different ways to see the world whether it is another culture or even your own child just somehow gifted with original ideas. Maggie and her mother stay apart of the whole world around them and spend most of time by taking care of the objects of their house, their closed matrix. If the world consisted of such people, it would never move on. Dee is a rebel with a controversial character, but one thing is for sure: she has an identity which is able to face the world. The advice she gives to her sister: “You ought to try to make something of yourself, too, Maggie. It’s really a new day for us. But from the way you and Mama still live you’d never know it.” (705) is the message to each of us. It is the philosophy of the contemporary society, society which needs new blood, new ideas, and new heroes.

"Our Purpose"

"Our Purpose" does not only reflect goals of the editors and writers of The "Global village news", but sounds like a hymn to the “global community” and represents a significant appeal to everybody for an active participation and sharing ideas as well. This small piece of edition introduces a great philosophy of thinking about the world not only as “mine” or that of “my people” but as “ours”, belonging to everybody, to the human society as a whole.

The "World of the World of Coca-Cola"

"The World of Coca- Cola" is a huge advertising action of the company. It involves history, politics and economics of "the Coca-Cola" and America as a whole...however does not talk much about the quality of the product itself. The "Coca-Cola" drink is presented as an "ambassador of Americana abroad", and I will agree with this fact. However, such American image can be viewed both negative and positive outside the country. For those, who realize the consequences of its consumption for their health, "Coca-Cola" together with such American marks as "Mc Donald’s" and "Cheeps" go into a big trash. Others will enjoy it until they don’t need to see the doctor…In any case, The “World of Coca-Cola” seems to be a nice entertainment and I personally would go to visit it by curiosity and see if it will change my tastes for drinks.

Barnlund on communication in a global village

Barnlund builds his reflection around such well-known terms as “cultural shock”, “global village” and “intercultural communication”. He seems to consider the physical closeness to the cultural diversity as a raising problem, obstacle to deal with and blames technology for that. I agree that every language and culture have different values and codes of sense-meanings. Yes, we are all different and it is hard to understand each other sometimes even within one single culture. However, I would fear more for example such consequences of globalization as domination of one culture over others, erasing of authentic traditions and values, segregation. I totally support his argument about mutual respect and the fact that if we learn to understand other cultures we become free to choose among the values that better go for us. We are all different, and let it be! This is what makes our world and our life attractive, full of new ideas and variety of colors!

Grace and mystery in the commercial "L'Eau par Kenzo", Introduction

In the first paragraph of his article On Reading a Video Text, Robert Scholes reveals: “Filters and other devices cause us to see the world through jaundiced or rose-colored optics, coloring events with emotion more effectively than verbal pathetic fallacy and less obtrusively.” To support this idea I will use the example of the commercial “L’eau par Kenzo”, representing a powerful sequence of images focusing on a young couple, which in my prospective may raise deep questions in our minds about the sense of relationship between men and women.

Without paying attention to details of a video, and especially to its visual aspect, many of passive viewers might not understand the main idea of a video and pass by something, that can be important for them and even change their lives.

That is why, in this paper I will try to show that even though our cultural backgrounds and our own personalities make us often resist the new ideas that a video tries to tell us, a powerful video should inspire us to think differently through its visual aspect because it is a piece of art and each video is first of all what we see.

"On reading a video text" by Robert Schloes

Robert Scholes describes how video can achieve its power and influence the spectator’s perception of it. He is absolutely right by saying it is all “a complex dynamic of power and pleasure”. Sound, light, slow or faster motions can change dramatically our feelings about what we see. I agree with him that art in general is our way to escape the reality. For example, in the commercial “L’eau par Kenzo” our minds are totally captured by music we hear and disappearing in a fantasy world created by black and white colors, camera movements and style of acting that we see. All this makes us almost smell the perfume itself at the end. Scholes analyzes a commercial telling about a black man who accomplished his dream and became a well-known Basketball player. However, he does not talk much about visual effects of that video and concentrates mostly on its cultural context and tries to estimate its cultural value for America. He argues that the commercial perfectly corresponds to common American beliefs, so well that…it even becomes a danger. That is why I found the conclusion of the article rather unexpected and contradictory to what was said at the beginning and in the body. Schloes manifests the necessity of being critical and being aware of that danger to “surrender” to a skillfully built text of a video. This is true but I would also not forget about appreciation of a commercial video as a piece of art, if it has been made at such level, of course! I believe this idea is strongly present in the article even if its conclusion seems to tell the opposite.

Summary of "L'eau par Kenzo" commercial

This commercial for “L’eau par Kenzo” shows a young woman and a young man slowly moving in front of each other in the river. Camera starts approaching to them first under the water that covers them till hips then focuses mostly on their faces in profile. We can notice that the young people do not touch each other and keep on smiling and looking eyes into eyes. We can hear a song that says: “it’s so romantic…” The black and white colors of the video and nature on the background make it look even more romantic. The remarkable thing is that the heroes feel the presence of somebody else. In between their game, the man suddenly turns his eyes into the camera and looks ashamed, after a moment he turns his face to the camera and looks disturbed. After a while the girl turns decisively to the camera and gives a very angry look, after what the camera leaves them and we see the man laughing. Images of two perfumes of “l’Eau par Kenzo” pronounced in French conclude the commercial.

Microsoft office 2007

I don't know what was the point of making a new version Microsoft Word, it'spretty much the same. It makes things just more complicated and not easier, I was so used to the old version. May be I am just not a high tech person...and most of will say: "the new version is great!" But I always get so nervious when I only hear "a new version of..." Emotions have no deal with technology, I am used to forget about that, sorry!

What do you consider as reading?

Robert Scholes suggests reading should be "a dialectical search for the truth" (623).

I would not completely agree with this statement because not always the content of what we read will necessarily appoint to some sort of truth. Moreover, the goal of each reading person can be different and not necessarily finding the truth in what he or she is reading. Thus, we should distinguish and take in consideration different categories of readers and readings. It can be reading with educational purposes, with research objectives or either reading for selfentertainment. Let us take an example of journalists who are used to read a lot and in most of cases not to find the truth but to gather information, material, facts as right or wrong as they are and not to look for truth in it. Of course, a philosopher will take everything seriously and "dialectically search for the truth" everywhere, because this is his way to be and to think. But, it seems to me that nowadays most of people read just to get information or satisfaction from a beloved book. That's how our world is just because all people are different. Who would argue with that?
