"Berlin Walls" by Brian Ladd

It is impressive how the Berlin Wall was built in one night, was physically present for about 30 years and still remains in the mentality of the German people nowadays. The Wall divided and united people at the same time. The past always has an echo in the present and future. Whether a positive or negative one, depends on how well people are able to make right conclusions from it. It is shocking for me that the German nation tried for along time and is still trying to ignore some facts of its history. Not wanting to leave a piece of the Wall as a monument is a clear example of that. Nobody can blame them after everything survived but theirs is not the most tragic history in the world. Each people has its own tragedies and black pages of history, the strength is to keep them in the book in order to teach children what is wrong and right in the world of human society. In this sense, little Anne Frank who was killed together with her whole family is stronger than anyone by declaring in her last words: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

Coke commerical

I would say this is a true community unified by their love for Coke. Barnlund would definitely describe these people as neighbors not only because of their physical closeness but also the emotional symbolic one. However, this commercial seems to me a little bit scary. In my prospective, it looks more like a “cultural myopia” than a “universal discourse”. This gathering of people standing in the same position, singing the same song with the same expressions on their faces and holding the same bottle of Coke reminds me the German people in the time of Nazis or the Soviet people in the communist period who blindly followed one ideology and had to behave and think in the same way. The person, who does not want to follow it, becomes a social outcast and even a danger for the society. Such brainwashing and indoctrination are often followed by manipulation of people in someone’s purpose. Of course, promotion of Coke is not such dangerous as that of Nazism but when the principle is the same, the outcome might be equally negative.

Alice Walker "Everyday Use"

This story recalls me so much my two cousins: one of them Vita (the oldest one) behaving in her own way almost as a boy and making her dreams and thoughts apart from others and the youngest one Julia looking exactly as her mother (my taunt), sweet beautiful girl who used to have the best clothes and most of love and attention in their family. Logically, both of them never got along with each other until the day when Julia went to the same college as her graduating sister situated far away from their home town and needed her help with everything. Finally, she realized that Vita is her family and the only person besides parents who she can really rely on…Maggie seems to be quieter and less demanding than Julia, however their problem is in the same lack of personality and acceptance of differences. Walker demonstrates how blind, miserable and isolated look those who do not understand and have no intention to learn about possible different ways to see the world whether it is another culture or even your own child just somehow gifted with original ideas. Maggie and her mother stay apart of the whole world around them and spend most of time by taking care of the objects of their house, their closed matrix. If the world consisted of such people, it would never move on. Dee is a rebel with a controversial character, but one thing is for sure: she has an identity which is able to face the world. The advice she gives to her sister: “You ought to try to make something of yourself, too, Maggie. It’s really a new day for us. But from the way you and Mama still live you’d never know it.” (705) is the message to each of us. It is the philosophy of the contemporary society, society which needs new blood, new ideas, and new heroes.

"Our Purpose"

"Our Purpose" does not only reflect goals of the editors and writers of The "Global village news", but sounds like a hymn to the “global community” and represents a significant appeal to everybody for an active participation and sharing ideas as well. This small piece of edition introduces a great philosophy of thinking about the world not only as “mine” or that of “my people” but as “ours”, belonging to everybody, to the human society as a whole.

The "World of the World of Coca-Cola"

"The World of Coca- Cola" is a huge advertising action of the company. It involves history, politics and economics of "the Coca-Cola" and America as a whole...however does not talk much about the quality of the product itself. The "Coca-Cola" drink is presented as an "ambassador of Americana abroad", and I will agree with this fact. However, such American image can be viewed both negative and positive outside the country. For those, who realize the consequences of its consumption for their health, "Coca-Cola" together with such American marks as "Mc Donald’s" and "Cheeps" go into a big trash. Others will enjoy it until they don’t need to see the doctor…In any case, The “World of Coca-Cola” seems to be a nice entertainment and I personally would go to visit it by curiosity and see if it will change my tastes for drinks.
